“. . . the desire her whole person expressed was that of communicating to me what she was tasting: communicating with me through flavors, or communicating with flavors through a double set of taste buds, hers and mine. . . .”

My Favorite Momo at Nepali Bhanchha Ghar

Momos are practically a way of life in Jackson Heights. There is a huge Himalayan community there—Tibetans, Nepalis, and Bhutanese—and, naturally, a similarly huge number of restaurants and food trucks selling momos, the ubiquitous Himalayan dumpling.

goat jhol momo

Nepali Bhanchha Ghar, naturally, makes momos in the Nepali style, which for me usually means jhol, the yellow curry sauce that you can get your momos immersed in. The jhol at Bhanchha Ghar is on the soupy side (it can also be thicker and more saucy) and extremely flavorful, as are the momos themselves. I usually get goat momos, since I love goat and it’s popular in Nepal anyway. The skins on these are so thin and delicate that some come apart in the soup, but no matter: they’re wonderfully tasty anyway.

sel roti

The other dish I love to get here is sel roti. This is a fried ring of rice dough and a garlicky, spicy dipping sauce. Just perfect.
